    HY511 Candy Cane Tetras!

A.k.a. the "Ornate" or "False Rosy" Tetra, this is a somewhat newly discovered species.  The HY511 Candy Cane Tetra is native to Peru and the Amazon and has gorgeous coloration with striped fins.  They are also quickly growing in popularity with fish enthusiasts!  Most are translucent with light pink or maroon in color with white and red stripes on their fins.

This peaceful species make an elegant addition to any aquarium, and can create beautiful displays in a planted tank.  They are best kept in groups of at least 6 since they are schooling fish.  Due to being kept in such numbers and to how they like to swim about the upper-middle levels of the water - sometimes also exploring the bottom levels - they will be most successful in an aquarium of 20 gallons or more.  These Tetras enjoy and best thrive in dense vegetation, dim lighting, slower (or redirected) water currents, and plenty of places to hide or explore such as rocks, driftwood, and floating plants.

HY511 Candy Cane Tetras will appreciate having very clean water, too, so regular bi-weekly 30-50% water changes may be necessary.  This species are fantastic community fish that can be kept with other small, amicable tankmates (or even larger, non-aggressive invertebrates).  Good tankmates may include the Diamond Tetra, Bleeding Heart Tetra, Black Phantom Tetra (also on sale for 2 for $5 until August 12th!) or the Kuhli Loach.  Other types of fish that could be housed with these colorful tetras could be Barbs, Rasboras, or even certain Discus species.

They are easy to care for, fairly hardy, remain pretty small, and are suitable for beginners as well as experienced hobbyists.  These Tetras can be quite active in the aquarium environment and are sure to be noticed by onlookers in any tank!  You can get the HY511 Candy Cane Tetras for only $3.99 each at Uncle Bill's Pet Centers until August 12th!

    Harlequin (Heteromorpha) Rasboras!

    harlequin het rasboras

The Het. Harlequin Rasbora is one of the more popular Rasboras and very commonly available in the hobby.  Many people often mistake it for a tetra, but it is a member of the cyprinid family, which all have two barbs on the sides of the upper lip.  While they are small, if you look close, you will see the thin barbs on its mouth as it turns in the water.  It grows to approximately two inches and is very subtly but often beautifully colored.  The common name alludes to the black triangular patch on the body, reminiscent of the patterns found on the costume of a harlequin. The genus name "Rasbora" comes from an Indian word meaning "fish"!

harlequin rasbora They have an iridescent, pearly sheen to their body when kept in subdued light, but it sometimes may fade out under the bright lights of a normal aquarium.  Found in Asia, Thailand, Sumatra and Indonesia, they inhabit forest streams forming small shoals, and feeding on insects, crustaceans, and aquatic worms.  Fun Fact:  Singapore issued a ten cent postage stamp bearing its image!

The Harlequin Rasbora is quite adaptable and easy to care for as long as the water is kept clean and basic care requirements are met. It is also a shoaling fish, and would be best kept in numbers of about 6 or more.  They are a peaceful species of fish and can be kept in a community - just be sure to include plenty of aquatic plants and hiding spaces where they can retreat if they feel the need and to best duplicate their natural habitat.
    Hetamorpha Rasbora
Rasboras are great in a group and can be tankmates with many Tetras, Danios, Barbs, and even the Panda Cory Catfish that is also on sale now at only $5.99!  Right now until July 15, too, you can get your very own Harlequin Rasboras for just $1.99 each at Uncle Bill's Pet Centers!
