Best Aquatic Pets for Beginners

Pet fish habitats can range from a simple rectangular tank to nano reef or betta tanks to a saltwater aquarium holding 100 gallons or more. Uncle Bill’s generally recommends that people who are new to maintaining an aquarium choose a fish that’s low-maintenance. Here are some excellent freshwater fish for beginners:

*These three types of freshwater fish above get along well with each other, and can live in a large enough tank in same-sex groups.
Bettas
*Smart, showy, but only female Bettas can share a tank since males are aggressive to each other, but male Bettas may share a tank with Neon Tetras.

*While fairly aggressive, some of the most colorful and popular freshwater fish in the hobby.

*Avoid direct sunlight to deter algae growth
*Once a week
-Change about 10-20% of your tank water (varies by tank size and number of fish)
-Use a siphon when removing water so you can do it slowly
-Set aside water you siphon off to use when you clean the filter
-Only add pre-treated or R/O water to the tank

Zebrafish!

Zebra danios (or zebrafish, scientifically a.k.a. danio rerio) are one of the most recognizable freshwater fish in the fishkeeping hobby due to their active nature, iconic horizontal stripes, & variety of vibrant colors. They are also typically fairly hardy, not too picky, can get along with multiple other kinds of fish, & are peaceful to watch swim in their schools. Plus, they are easy to care for, can tolerate a wide range of temperature and water chemistry, and remain pretty small (less than 2”).

Be sure to keep them in groups of six or more in a tank of at least 25 gallons since they are a schooling species and are surface oriented fish. zebra-danio-1
These fish do well with other equally-active species especially. Possible tankmates may be a Chinese algae eater, serpae/red eye tetras, platies, mollies, swordtails, small barbs, dojo loaches, or other small danios. Fish with long-flowing fins may fall prey to some slight fin-nipping, but as long as there are plenty of each variety of fish that are similar in size and temperament then everything should be peaceful.

zebra-danio-3 Native to south / southeastern Asia in areas such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and India, these tropical fish enjoy longer tanks with plenty of space to swim about and strong current circulation. Tall plants or ones that float near the top will help them feel more like their in their natural habitat, too. Just be certain to have a secure lid on your tank so they don't have the opportunity to jump out!
