About Giant Schnauzers:

This breed is usually a friendly, gregarious giant. It is good with the entire family, including children, although this may depend on early social training. The Giant Schnauzer is an agile and active breed. A good watchdog with a keen awareness of its surroundings. Generally, it will want to check out all strangers and you can count on it to challenge other dogs. The Giant Schnauzer is the largest of the three Schnauzer breeds, the others being the Standard and the Miniature. Despite a strong resemblance to each other, the 3 breeds are distinctly different animals. The Giant Schnauzer is a German dog, originally bred to drive cattle. Because of its keen intelligence, it was later trained for police work.

Care and Exercise:

Coat needs good, vigorous brushing; beard and legs should be combed daily. Remove long, dead hairs from body by plucking. Legs, eyebrows, and beard must be shaped using scissors. Keep toenails short. This breed needs good brisk exercise, including long walks on a leash and occasional free romps when it is safe. For such a big dog, correct nutrition, obedience training, and plenty of exercise are very important.

Recommended Households:

This lovable giant is a marvelous dog for a country family with time and interest in a large working dog. Its coat needs attention, and it must have proper obedience training. The Giant Schnauzer does not do well on its own, and it deserves the care and attention it needs. It is not a dog for a casual owner.

About Miniature Schnauzers:

The Miniature Schnauzer is a friendly and companionable family dog. It's good with children and tolerant of other family pets. This breed is not inclined to fight and content to stay close to home. An alert, vocal watchdog. This breed tends to picks its favorties in the household, and will dole lavish attention on you to get a favorite treat, only to then totally ignore your further attemps to interact with it. The most popular of the terriers, the Miniature Schnauzer is the only one that cannot be traced to the British Isles. It is generally conceded that the breed was developed in Germany. A smaller replica of the Standard Schnauzer, the Miniature Schnauzer is a distinct breed. It was used on farms and around stables as a ratter and still lives up to the name it made for itself in this respect. Today this dog may look more glamorous than its ancestors did, but it has just as much courage. Its handsome appearance and flashy showmanship win it friends and honors in the show ring.

Care and Exercise:

Distinctive salt-and-pepper color can only be maintained by plucking or stripping. A clipped coat will soon lose this handsome effect, even on a black animal, but clipping is easier for the pet than orthodox grooming procedures are. In any case, to look its best, a Miniature Schnauzer must be trimmed; the method depends on the needs and wishes of the owner. Ears, eyes, teeth, and nails require routine care. Bathe the dog only when needed. Breed does well with whatever exercise it gets, but the more the better. A long walk on a leash once a day along with a few shorter excursions will keep the dog fit. Supervised off-leash exercise is excellent when conditions permit.

Recommended Households:

This intelligent little companion dog has all the assets we admire in a terrier and much less built-in aggression. Highly recommended for either city or country living, it is an ideal pet in any setting. It even travels exceptionally well. This breed is splendid with both elderly people and small children. It loves to be spoiled, but that is easy to control. The Miniature Schnauzer is a great little character in the world of dogs.
