About Pomeranians:

The Pomeranian is pleasant, friendly, and somewhat excitable. An intelligent and alert breed. It can be inquisitive to the point that it may become annoying. This breed tends to be noisy. A dog with pride, style and tenacity that cannot be left out of a game. Originally a much larger dog used for herding, this breed was first noticed in Pomerania—hence its name. It is considered a member of the Spitz family, a group of Northern sled dogs that includes the Samoyed, the Norwegian Elkhound, the Chow Chow, and other Arctic breeds. In England, through careful breeding, the Pomeranian was reduced in size from a huge 30-pound working breed to the diminutive 4- or 5- pound toy affectionately called the Pom. Recognized in America in 1900, the breed has since undergone further size reduction.

Care and Exercise:

Daily brushing is essential to maintain thick, bushy coat, particularly in summer when shedding. Avoid bathing because it destroys the coat; it is essential to blow-dry after bathing. Lightly sprinkle baby powder into the coat and dampen lightly with water from an atomizer while brushing. Requires weekly dental care to prevent mouth disorders. Wash eyes daily. Minimal exercise required. With patience, can be easily trained.

Recommended Households:

This fine family companion thrives in a busy atmosphere. Despite its small stature, it is a capable watchdog. It adjusts well to climatic changes and new situations, and is an excellent apartment dog for people who do not like walking at night or in bad weather, as it can he paper-trained. The Pomeranian is happy in almost any situation, as long as it is pampered by its family.
