About Pembroke Welsh Corgis:
This dog is more outgoing and restless than Cardigan Welsh Corgi. It is high-spirited, fun-loving, and friendly with other dogs and strangers. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is quite bold, but obedient and makes for an alert watchdog. Considerably younger than the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke traces its origin to the 12th century. It comes from Pembrokeshire, Wales. Despite a striking physical resemblance to today’s Cardigan, the Pembroke did not originally have any ancestors in common with the Cardigan. It descended from a northern sled dog-type rather than from the Dachshund family. However, during the 19th century, the Cardigan and the Pembroke were interbred, a practice that is no longer allowed. Today the 2 Corgis are regarded as separate breeds. The Pembroke is far more popular than the Cardigan, possibly because the English royalty has owned the breed for several generations. Starting in 1936, King George VI gave Pembroke Welsh Corgis to his daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth; today the queen still owns Pembroke Corgis.
Care and Exercise:
Coat requires about 10 minutes of brushing twice a week. Normal amount of shedding. Like all herding dogs, this Corgi loves to run. It is full of energy and should be exercised daily on a leash.
Recommended Households:
This breed apparently does not know it is a small dog; it behaves like a giant. Bold and fun-loving, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi makes a great family dog. With care and attention, it will bring many happy hours to its family. Many owners like to have pairs of these dogs.
