About Havanese:
A natural companion, gentle and very responsive to their human families. They are excellent with children and other pets including cats and other dogs. Very affectionate and are highly intelligent. They are easy to obedience train and get along well with other dogs. Following the French, Cuban and Russian Revolutions, the Havanese was almost extinct. This dog is from the family of Dogs called “Bichons”. The French word Bichon means “fleecy dog”. The Bichon Havanese originated in Cuba from an earlier breed known as Blanquito de la Habana (also called Havanese Silk Dog, now extinct). The Bichon Havanese was only found in the homes of aristoctic Cubans during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was continually bred in Cuba all through the 20th century and was the preferred pet dog of Cuban families. Breeding Havanese in the USA only started in the 1970’s. IN 1960 many Cubans migrated to the USA and brought there Havanese with them. Most of the Cuban refugees settled in Florida. A breeder names Mrs. Goodale advertised in a Florida newspaper and found Cuban families with the breed and obtained 6 dogs with pedigrees and later acquired more from Costa Rica.
Care and Exercise:
Good apartment dog, very active indoors and does not require a yard. Born to live in your home and not on the patio or in a kennel, but exercise is a requirement. Coat requires grooming at least 2 times weekly. There is little to no shedding, so dead hair must be removed by brushing. If this is not done, matting will be the result.
Recommended Households:
This very intelligent breed is an excellent breed for apartment living and good with people that are allergy suffers. They are non shedding Hypo allergenic dogs, and love to sit high up on a chair to observe what is going on. They have a long reputation of being a circus dog, probably because it learns quickly and enjoys doing things for people.
