About Boston Terriers:
This is a dapper, happy, and highly intelligent breed. A delightful family companion. The Boston Terrier is ideal with other pets and children. It is one of the most affectionate of all breeds that responds well to training and attention. Descended from the Bulldog and the English Terrier, the Boston Terrier is one of the few truly American breeds; it is widely recognized as the national dog of the United States. The breed was given full recognition in 1893. Through selective breeding, size has been greatly reduced—from the 32 pounds common in the late 19th century to 25 pounds or smaller today. Although called a terrier, it is not one at all; it is not a fighter like the true terriers are.
Care and Exercise:
Minimal coat care required. A good brisk buffing with an old, rough face cloth is generally sufficient. Rarely needs bathing. Provide daily, but not necessarily lengthy, exercise. Ball- fetching is always popular with this breed. May be hard to housebreak because of stubbornness; this is a small aristocrat. Actually can learn anything, including toilet manners, in a day or so.
Recommended Households:
This is a long-lived, affectionate breed and an alert watchdog. An excellent family pet, the Boston Terrier is gentle and full of fun, and adapts to any home environment—whether in the city, the suburbs, or the country. An easy dog for even the relatively inexperienced owner to manage.
