About Bernese Mountain Dogs:
This is a steady and loyal breed. It is not inclined to fawn or be overly friendly with strangers. Its reserved nature is a sign of caution, not pettiness. It must be dominated by its owner; otherwise the Bernese will try to be boss. The Bernese Mountain Dog can trace its lineage to the dogs of ancient Rome. Invading Roman soldiers brought their guard dogs with them to Switzerland over 2000 years ago, and from these canines the Swiss developed 4 breeds of large working dogs. While the other Swiss mountain dogs were used for herding, the Bernese Mountain Dog was bred by the basket weavers of Berne, Switzerland, for the sole purpose of drawing their carts to market. In Europe, the breed is still a superb draft animal. It has been popular in the United States as a farm dog, protector, and family friend.
Care and Exercise:
Thick coat should be brushed regularly. Bathe as necessary. Wipe ears clean with a little baby oil on a cotton swab. Keep toenails filed, and be sure teeth are free of tartar. This breed needs a great deal of exercise, as befits its working-dog heritage. Because of its thick coat and sturdy build, it can be kept in unheated quarters. Although it does best in the country, the Bernese Mountain Dog may be kept in a city as long as its needs for strenuous exercise are met.
Recommended Households:
A large, handsome animal, the Bernese Mountain Dog makes a marvelous pet for a family with a large home and space for outdoor exercise. To be sure of getting a dog with a good temperament, choose a puppy that appears bold and robust. Be sure to give it obedience training early.
