Young fish have two broad red stripes and an ocellus (false eye spot) on the end of the dorsal and a black blotch at the base of the tail fin and frequent shallow water. Mature fish lack the two spots and have broader red stripes and are found in outer reef areas around steep drop-offs in deep water around 150 feet. These wrasses prefer hard shell crustacean foods like crabs, shrimp, isopods, sea urchins and snails.
