Facts and Information
Young of this species frequent lagoons and bays away from the larger predators that troll reef areas. Juveniles are similar in shape to the adults, but the coloration is bright yellow with the signature orange patch just beneath and behind the eye. It is not uncommon to spot the brightly colored youngsters in waters as shallow as 10 feet, tooling around coral rubble, sifting through the silt for food. Mature specimens are unique among reef fishes with the drab olive coloring and brilliant orange shoulder patch ringed in dark blue. Some specimens are solid dark olive; others are light olive in the front and dark olive on the rear. The olive coloration most likely serves to camouflage them against the large rocks on the outer reef slopes they inhabit.
