This fish is attractively colored as a juvenile and as it matures, turns a uniform velvety black. This color change usually begins when the fish reaches 2.5 to 3.0 inches. Young specimens gather around heads of Acropora corals for safety and feed on the waste products produced by the corals. Adults exhibit the same feeding behavior patterns, but with Tridacna clams.
