This beautiful species is found throughout the Indo-Pacific including the Great Barrier Reef. It is also called a Six-bar Wrasse for the six red-brick saddles across the back. The genus name "Thalassoma" is derived from the Greek word "thalassa" meaning "the sea". The Hardwicke wrasse inhabits shallow waters and is rarely found below fifty feet. These fish may also do well in a live-rock aquarium. Terminal phase males are the most colorful and sought after by hobbyists.
