Facts and Information

The Clown Soapfish, better known as a Clown Grouper, is an attractively marked species that doesn`t grow too big (at least as far as most groupers are concerned) and adapts easily to aquarium life and prepared foods. The signature brown saddles on the back distinguish this species from similarly colored groupers and soapfishes. Clown Soapfishes grow between thirteen and fourteen inches and inhabit very deep waters in the wild, from seventy-five feet down to over six hundred feet. When stressed or handled, this fish exudes a sudsy toxin from the skin called grammistin which has an extremely bitter taste and helps it avoid predation by larger fishes.
