Yellowfin Fairy Wrasse

Facts and Information

yellow fin fairy wrasse

Another spectacularly colored "velvet" or "fairy" wrasse, the Yellowfin Fairy Wrasse is found in small aggregations in shallow water around reef areas.  This species feeds on plankton in the wild.  Young specimens lack the bright yellow bar and are more of an orange-red, versus the scarlet red of adults.  Mature specimens also have a white belly. Wrasses are the second largest and diverse group of fishes after the gobies with sixty genera (different genera) and five hundred species recognized species so far.  Many have distinctly different color patterns and phases for juvenile and adult stages; some even have several different color phases as juveniles.
