Facts and Information

For most marine aquarium keepers, this is THE triggerfish to keep. The Clown Trigger`s common name is apt for its colorful, spotted appearance. The scientific name, “Balistoides” (“of the fields, living in the fields”) “conspicillium” (Latin word meaning “a place to look from”) is more indicative of this fish`s habits. Clown Triggers inhabit the seaward reef slopes below the turbulent surge zone, where the water is clear and there is plenty of rock outcroppings to hide under. These fish are armed with two erectile spines (one on the dorsal, the other on the belly) that allow it to "lock" itself in a crevice during periods of retreat or rest, or ward off intruders and potential predators. Clown Triggers feed on meaty foods with shells like crabs, snails, tunicates, urchins and mollusks. A solitary species that is relatively uncommon in any of its region.
