Facts and Information
This beautifully colored goby is only found in the waters off Indonesia in the Western Pacific Ocean. It is known to be an excellent reef inhabitant that generally tolerates other fish quite well. Skirmishes over territory are common, but rarely amount to more than chasing the intruder away. Most dry foods are taken as are frozen meaty types. Provide a soft substrate for the goby such as fine aragonite sand, for burrowing and sifting food. Larger gravels like crushed coral may be too coarse for the fish and damage the skin and mouth. Shrimp gobies, as they are often called, form relationships with the Pistol or Snapping Shrimps. These colorful little shrimps are almost blind and depend on the goby`s signals to avoid predation. The gobies are vigilant in their efforts to protect the little shrimps and the shrimps return the favor by excavating a burrow they both share. The den site moves quite often as the burrowing action is how the shrimp feeds itself in tiny organisms that grow down in the sand.
