A large and robust angel with a huge range that includes the Indian Ocean, the Red and Arabian Seas, the Micronesian islands of Oceania as well as the northern coast of Australia east to the Great Barrier Reef. Mature adults frequent areas of heavy coral growth, while juveniles prefer the safety of isolated lagoon areas. Young specimens adapt to aquarium life with ease and make spectacular tank inhabitants when they mature into adults, though captive reared specimens rarely attain the size of the ones in the wild.
