Facts and Information
Known as Mystery Snails because it wasn't known how they proliferate, but some aquarists would say it's because you can't tell whether they are dead or not! Actually, you can, by pressing on the "trap door". If it squishes in and some gray stringy bits flush out, get rid of it straight away as it's a goner. If it feels firm and pulls away from you as you press it, it's alive. Be sure to place them with their door towards the gravel so when they do come out, they can move. A snail on its back, so to speak, can't right itself. To keep these snails from breeding in the aquarium, keep them alone or purchase only one sex. Fortunately, it's easy to tell the boys from the girls with these snails. Males have a convex door; (curves out) females have a concave door (curves in).
