Facts and Information
The genus name "Xiphophorous" comes from the Greek words "xiphos" (sword) and "phorous" (to carry). Originating in the slow moving streams and rivulets in Mexico, Platys are one of the easiest fishes to care for and also some of the most colorful. Through decades of selective breeding, dozens of colors have been produced, along with varying fin types. The two main concerns of the average Platy are eating and mating. They are known to have a hearty appetite and while they prefer small live foods like Brineshrimp and worms, they will feed on just about anything that hits the water. Platys are usually the first fish on the scene when it's time to eat and often gobble up all the food before the other fishes even know what's going on.
