Facts and Information

Also called a Ringlet Pleco, it is one of the handful of the Panaquolus (pronounced pan-UH-ko-lus) species of loricarids, P. maccus is the one most likely to be seen in the aquarium hobby. It has a rather broad range in the Orinoco River in Brazil. A specimen captured from the Amazon looks identical to the Clown Pleco, but has a much darker color patter with wavy edges instead of smooth. This could be a separate species, or just a geographic variation of the Clown Pleco, if it is the same fish, it has an even more extensive habitat base than originally thought. There a number of other plecos available that are called "Clown Pleco," and for a long time, they were all thrown in the Peckoltia genus, followed by a sp., which is short for species.
