Zebra Tilapia

Facts and Information

tilapia buttikoferi

Since the Zebra Tilapia is a thick bodied fish that grows to twelve inches, this happens often, especially since they are highly territorial and aggressive.  Females are smaller and dividers are often used between breeding pairs with a hole only large enough to let the female through so she can escape the male if he becomes too aggressive during spawning.  They will eat any live plants and are known to dig in the gravel and even rearrange decorations in the tank to their liking.  This Species originates in West Africa in the lower coastal regions from Guinea-Bissau to Liberia.
