Vampire Pleco

The genus Leporacanthicus is relatively new and houses a handful of armored catfish from South America. This one is collected in Brazil in the Rio Guama, was well known in the hobby long before it had a scientific name. The name of Vampire Pleco came from the type of teeth on this catfish which are markedly different from other sucker mouth cats. They also have a tooth on the upper portion of the disc, nicknamed an "eggtooth." Egg teeth are seen on many Species of reptiles and used to cut their way out of the leathery egg. Vampire Plecos use their eggtooth to break the shells of gastropods (snails) and mollusks and crustaceans.
