Red-Bellied Piranha

Facts and Information

redbellied piranha

The Red-bellied Pirahna, also known as a Black Spot Pirahna (it only has the spots as a baby and juvenile) is easily the most well-known Piranha species to the aquarium hobby, and is also one of the most aggressive.  Its distribution lies in South America, east of the Andes Mountains in the Parana and Paraguay river systems (both are far south of the Amazon), as well as most of the major rivers of the Amazon basin.  It can be found in the whitewater regions (meaning around river rapids in clear, fast-flowing, highly-oxygenated water) of the following rivers:  the Madre de Dios, the Beni, the Essequibo, the Rio Negro, the Ucayali, the Maranon, the Jurub, the Madeira, the Manaus, the Tapajos, the Xingu, and the Toncatins.  It can also be found in the Rio Branco and Essequibo rivers of north east Brazil and the Guianas.  It is the most widespread and abundant of all the Piranha species.  The recommended tankmates listed above are other Piranhas of interest, and not necessarily fish that can cohabitate with this species.
