Red Wag Swordtail

Facts and Information

red velvet swordtail

The genus name "Xiphophorous" comes from the Greek words "xiphos" (sword) and "phorous" (to carry). Originating in the rivers of Central America from Mexico to Honduras, Swordtails are one of the most popular aquarium fishes.  They are active and gregarious swimmers and tolerate other fishes well.  These fish are prone to jumping, so keep the tank well covered, especially around the filter, as it is instinct for them to seek out current, swim against it, and try to jump over it.
