Polypterus

Facts and Information

All the Polypterus are found in the freshwaters of Africa and all have an elongated body sheathed with thick, rhombic scales. They also have a bi-lobed swim bladder with the left side connecting to the esophagus and acting as an accessory respiratory organ. Young Polypterus have external branched gills that fall off as the fish matures. All the members are carnivores and good escape artists.
