Blue Discus

Facts and Information

blue discus

Easily one of the most popular cichilds and considered by most to be a fish for the well experienced aquarist.  While they have been commercially bred for years, most specimens have not adapted to alkaline water and some alteration and filtering of tank water through peat pellets may be necessary. They originate from deep in the Amazon in the black water tributaries where they nestle among the roots of submerged trees and try their best to look like fallen leaves to avoid predation by other larger river fish and the native Indians who use them as food fish and easily catch them from between the roots with spears fashioned from tree branches.  They are secretive, shy and easily spooked.  They are very sensitive to waning water quality and often forgo eating as the conditions in the aquarium take a downturn.
