One of the largest of the spiny eels, the fire eel grows to over three feet and has a body thickness of four to six inches. The body is dark brown to black with bright red, orange and yellow markings along the sides of the body and around the gill covers. They are predatory, feeding on shrimps and fish in the rivers of Burma, Thailand, Borneo, and Sumatra. Juveniles feed on small crustaceans and insect larvae.
