Comet Goldfish

Facts and Information

comet goldfish

Goldfish have been used for live food for predatory fish for decades in the aquarium hobby.  They are inexpensive and readily available.  While they make for excellent foodstuffs for larger fish, please be advised that all "raw" fish (in this case "live" fish) contain significant amounts of thiaminase, a vitamin-B destroying enzyme.  Deficiencies in Vitamin B manifest as chronic nerve inflammation, fatigue, loss of appetite and seizures.  Be sure to round out the fish's diet with other foods and use the live ones in moderation. You can "beef up" the nutritional value of the fish used for live foods by feeding them a good quality flake food for a few days before feeding them to your fish.  You can avoid the pitfalls of Vitamin B deficiencies by supplementing your fish's diet with a good-quality prepared food.  The "suggested tankmates" listed above are other live foods you might be interested in.
