Bala Shark

Facts and Information

bala shark

This fish is not a shark at all, but a giant minnow and large specimens are often utilized as a food source in their native range from Thailand to Indonesia.  This giant cyprinid prefers to munch on algae, especially diatoms that form films on glass, rocks and the broad leaves of plants.  Insects and crustaceans are also eaten when available.  Allow algae to form on smooth surfaces of the aquarium like river stones or the inner surfaces of the tank itself so the fish has matter to graze on.
