Freckled Hawkfish

Facts and Information

freckled hawkfish

Also called a Forster`s or Blacksided Hawkfish.  The Freckled Hawkfish is one of the hardest species to identify because there are six (and counting) color variations.  One distinguishing characteristic is the presence of freckles on the head.  On some specimens the freckles are small and red, others they are larger and brown or grayish purple.  These fish are named Hawkfish for their feeding manner by perching (via the pectoral fins) on coral branches and rocks and swooping down to snatch up small fish and shrimps.  They can be ravenous and are known to gobble down any shrimp, crab or small prawn unlucky enough to cross their path.  Even cleaner shrimps and gobies will be eaten with gusto by these fish.
