Engineer/Convict Goby

Facts and Information

engineer convict goby

The Convict Worm Goby (often referred to as an Engineer Goby) is part of an exclusive family (the Pholidichthyidae) with only two species.  Young fish are a velvety chocolate brown with two white horizontal stripes.  This color pattern is an example of aggressive mimicry (one animal being similarly colored and patterned as one that is venomous or poisonous) to resemble the highly venomous Coral Catfish (one of the eel-tailed catfishes of the Plotosidae family) that is seen around coral reef areas.  Young gobies also gather in large tight-knit groups like the Coral Catfish juveniles do.  Mature fish are attractively colored with the same velvety brown body, but the horizontal stripes break into wavy vertical bands.  This species is seen often in the hobby and is readily available.  Young specimens are sold at 3 to 4 inches and begin to form the mature coloration at around 6 or 7 inches.  In the wild, this fish feeds on small plankton animals and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
