Winter Pet Care

by the American Animal Hospital Association

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their pets are just as accustomed to the warm shelter of the indoors as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for extended periods of time, thinking that all animals are adapted to live outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Take your animals for a winter check-up before winter kicks in. Your veterinarian can check to make sure they don’t have any medical problems that will make them more vulnerable to the cold.

Dog Care: Dogs and Thunderstorm Phobia

by the American Animal Hospital Association

We've been getting a lot of severe weather here in Indianapolis lately. What can we do if we have a pet that's afraid of thunderstorms? We've found this great article by the AAHA that might be able to answer that question:

"Does your pooch bury his head into your side every time it thunders out? Does he dive under the bed whenever rain starts to fall? In more severe cases, however, panicking dogs have been known to chew furniture, tear drapes, break windows, and more during thunderstorms. In either case, the behavior is a sign of a terrified, unhappy dog... MORE...

Why "Unusual Animals" as Pets?

Having an Indian leaf or stick insect as a pet might not sound like the love of a lifetime, but for many people insect pets can be exactly that. They are relatively easy to care for and have very interesting behavioral characteristics and biology. There are more insects on the planet than all of the other animals put together. With such numbers comes diversity and adaptation to a wide variety of environments and behaviors. They make for interesting captive specimens for the young and the experienced keeper. The habitats you can set up for your chosen specimen can be quite elaborate with terraces, caves, burrows, ledges and live plants (when appropriate).

Dog Care: Spring Allergies

As new plants and flowers burst into life this spring, so too do the symptoms of hay fever. But humans aren't the only ones who suffer. Blooming plants, grasses and flowers can trigger allergic reactions called atopy in dogs and cats... MORE...

Leaving Your Aquarium on a Vacation

An aquarium that is well kept needs little preparation to endure a short vacation. On the opposite end of the spectrum, an aquarium that is neglected won't miss the attention it doesn't get anyway while you're gone. A few days before you leave, do an equipment check to make sure everything is operating as it should be... MORE...

Dog Care: Winter Pet Care

by the American Animal Hospital Association

It's that time of year - the leaves are almost done falling, the time has fallen back an hour, and some parts of the country are looking forward to ice, snow, and freezing cold temperatures. Now's the time to snuggle up in front of a fireplace with a warm kitty on your lap or a puppy at your feet. But before you settle down to your long winter's nap, take some time to learn how to keep those animals as warm and comfortable as you are.

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their pets are... MORE...
