Why "Unusual Animals" as Pets?

Having an Indian leaf or stick insect as a pet might not sound like the love of a lifetime, but for many people insect pets can be exactly that. They are relatively easy to care for and have very interesting behavioral characteristics and biology. There are more insects on the planet than all of the other animals put together. With such numbers comes diversity and adaptation to a wide variety of environments and behaviors. They make for interesting captive specimens for the young and the experienced keeper. The habitats you can set up for your chosen specimen can be quite elaborate with terraces, caves, burrows, ledges and live plants (when appropriate).

For some people the allure of just having something exotic is reason enough to try it out. Everyone has had a pet hamster or goldfish at some time or another, but not everyone has had a pet tarantula or scorpion! Another reason you might want to try an insect as a pet is they are relatively easy to care for. Their housing can be simple and modest or elaborate and invested, depending on what you have possession of. Do take the time to familiarize yourself with the invertebrate’s needs as some require more diligence in care than others.
